Macedonia Part 1 - Skopje my birthplace

As I am trying to recover from a jet-lag and adapt to the Arizona heat, I wake up in the middle of the night, unsure if my own bedroom is mine.  It looks familiar, but am I back home?  And what is home?  I think I have more than one.
I spent three weeks in Macedonia, from May 15 to June 5.  This is the place I was born and lived until I was 16.  And I can safely call it home, because even after 18 years of my absence, going back to it, it still felt comfortable, familiar, inviting, despite the fact that it has changed in it's appearance.
On the very first day after we arrived, I let my son and husband sleep, while myself, overwhelmed by the excitement to be in a place I know inside and out, took my daughter for a walk to see my grandpa.  And on our first walk in Macedonia, in the playground of the kindergarten where my brother used to go, we found a 4 leaf clover.  It's a sign, I thought, we will have a great time here.
My kids enjoyed playing in every single playground, and there was one on almost every corner.  Now they are nothing special in comparison to the American playgrounds, and almost every time some of the equipment was broken.  And still somehow they felt dear to me, with all of their imperfections.  My kids' favorite, this spinning thing, that I don't know the name for, and there is nothing like that on American playgrounds.
(the apartment where I grew up, my parents sold it to one of my dad's cousins.  So I was lucky to be able to visit inside).

I visited the neighborhood where I lived on several occasions.  Trees have grown three times the size they were when I lived there.  Many new playgrounds and landscapes have been added.  But they didn't feel foreign to me.  It's like being away from home, and upon returning someone has done a make-over to your place just they way you would wanted to be.
I found this on the concrete foundation of one of the fences.  The names of two boys (now men) that lived in the same building.  I am pretty sure it's them, although it could be kids from the newer generation.

The city has changed in the way of more buildings being built, where previously there were only fields.  And the downtown has been decorated with monuments.  Many locals will complain about the government spending on these buildings and monuments, questioning the purpose, the ownership of the heros, the style etc. (baroque looking buildings that are homes to museums).
I didn't take many pictures of that, I simply enjoyed the surrounding without judging whether or not it should be there.

There is one place that if I went back to live in Skopje, I'd be visiting every week on my days off.  The mountain Vodno.  It stands tall on the south side of the city, and in the last few years a big cross has been erected on it's top, so you won't miss it.  For those who are athletic and without little kids like myself, you can conquer this mountain in less than a day.  I have done it several times in my teens when I lived there.  Nowadays, an airtram will take you up on the the top, where you can enjoy a view of the city and its surroundings.  There is a small restaurant, a playground, many picnic areas and a chance to hike down back to the city or on the other side of the city for those more adventurous.

And here is where I am going to wrap up this entry.  I have a lot more to tell you about.

I stitched on paper yesterday, making cards.  Sometime I force myself to make something, anything, even if I am very tired and my brain is only thinking about sleeping and dreaming.  It's easy to fall into the 'tired' trap.  If I let it, I can use it for an excuse indefinitely.  And I don't let it.  And I make something every day, no matter how small or insignificant I may think it is.

In less than a month I will be in Macedonia.  I.....need to take a moment and think about how I feel about it all.  It's been so long, and it makes it unreal that it really is going to happen.

This week

After a week of getting up at 430am, in order to be at work at 6am, today (Saturday) I got up at 7am and felt like I had slept in. I have less than 3 weeks for Junk in the Trunk, a vintage-handmade fair here in Phoenix.  Last year my friend Karen invited me.  She had a booth, selling her handmade work as well as vintage supplies.  I decided to participate this year and get a booth too.  It felt great to get accepted, and now I feel like a nervous wreck trying to get it all together.  I don't think I will have as much work made, as I wanted too.  I sometimes feel that I get myself involved in too many events.  On one hand it makes my life interesting, and exciting.  On the other hand I feel like I am running a mad woman race and I never get a glimpse of how far away I am from the finish line.

This week my Maggie and I were working with watercolors.  She is always much braver than me.  I let my brain think to much and get stuck on what to do, where to start.  While I was putting fearful little circles of water and trying to blend in some color, she was bold and brave and full of color.  I wasn't sure what to do, past the pitiful circles, so I filled in the blank with zentangle.

This week I also picked up a couple more rolls of washi tape.  I really like this colorful tape.  I know I am not the only one.  Here is Maggie's washi tape artful card.

I counted 20 rolls of washi tape.  Is that too much?  Nahhh

And here there are at McDonald's munching.  I took a break and had an apple pie and coffee.

Saguaro lake

We spent last Sunday at Saguaro Lake (north of Phoenix, off Hwy 87).  The water was still chilly for my taste, and none of us went further than knee deep.  But there were people swimming, or rowing on a surfboard, boating etc.  We were building sand castles.

I've been on vacation from work, and working at home.  Working on building inventory for Junk in the Trunk.  Here is a sampling of the many projects I have going on at the moment.

From a couple of weeks ago:
  • I zentangled little 1" squares of paper
  • colored them
  • put them between two pieces of glass
  • added a little bit of lace to the back side
  • copper taped them
  • soldered them
  • and at the end I noticed.....I used a lot of Dr. Seuss colors.

Soldering

I took a workshop that was mostly soldering, but it did have resin involved too (which was the reason I signed up for it).  This is the sample I made in class.

Ostrich Festival

Our town Chandler, has an Ostrich Festival every March.  It's a carneval of a sort with rides, games, shows.  Among the many attractions it's an Ostrich Race.  They strap modified bicycle carts on a harness and around the giant bird, and off they go.  It's a funny thing to see.  Often times the harness doesn't stay on for the duration of the 2 min race.  It's not meant to stay, because otherwise it will hurt the bird.  It's more for fun.

This year there was something new for the kids.  Floating bubble rides.   A big inflatable pool was filled with water, and had bubbles big enough for a person to be inside.  A kid gets in, and the bubble is filled up with a big compressor pump, zipped up so the air stays in, and then it floats with the kid inside.  Patrick and Maggie loved it.  Here they are, side by side in a big bubble.

Maggie

On the one side of the table she draws, on the other I solder.  And that's how she can be my daughter and best friend.
P.S. Forgot about Baby Duck, she is hanging out with us too.

Week at a glance

I've been trying to be productive, finishing up old work, and making some new.  These are necklaces, they were sitting unfinished for a long time.

And although living in Arizona I can't say that I notice the arrival of spring, I am still inspired by it.  Especially now when the weather here allows for the windows to be open all day long, I can hear the chirping.  And that probably influenced me to play with some bird stamps and make these pins.

I recently took a three-session collage workshop, from a local artist, and these were my final project.  I need a lot of practice.

And back to fabric, when my mom visited a couple of weeks ago, we were making wrist pin-cushions.  These are the results.

Photo grid

Hallelujah!!!  I fixed my laptop tonight.  I thought it was done for, but honestly I haven't tried to put too much time in trying fix it myself.  I contemplated buying an Ipad, or another laptop, or something that I can use to keep up my blog alive, but with a big trip coming in May (yes I am finally going to Macedonia, see you've missed that news) I really did not want to have another expense.

And here is a photo grid I made with photos I took on my smart phone a month ago during a short trip to LA.  My husband and I went to a gallery opening where he had some work that I collaborated with him.  I wanted to go along so we went.

You maybe thinking I've abandoned my blog...and I did for a few weeks.  See my double second handed lap top gave up on me.  It will no longer connect to the internet.  And even though we do have another PC at home, it required an extra effort to sit behind a desk and a chair.  My day job, at Alaska Airlines requires me to sit behind a desk and a computer for the most part, and I make every effort to limit sitting behind another desk when I am off work.
I have been busy with crafting off course.  I've begun repurposing old kitchen linens into these stylish purses.  I've managed to secure a spot at a show called Junk in the Trunk, on May 3 and I've used every spare moment building my inventory for that.

And just when I though I got some tempo getting things done to have enough for May, the local antique mall called me to offer me some space as a vendor.  I've been on their wait list since last year, so I couldn't really pass on the opportunity.  I got a glass display case, not what I wanted, but it will do for starters.  And just about most of my inventory is now there.  Which means I got to start from scratch.

While we are on the crafting topic, let me also share the good news of having some of my work published again in one of the Stampington's publications.  This time Somerset Studio.  It is my little circus book I submitted some time ago.

In the middle of my busy working/crafting life, I must not forget the most important people in my life, my kids.  Going to parks, movies, building legoes, teaching my daughter zentangle (which she calls zumatary...I have no clue where that came from, her own imagined word)

And last but not least, I am taking a collage workshop.  Here are my first samples....need a lot of practice.

Thimbles up!

Thumbs or thimbles up to making some progress.  Last Friday, my day off I finished two bags.  You may think, why not more?  I am not sure how to admit this to you and myself, but I get frequently distracted, and I walk away from my projects to assist someone else, be that a child, a husband, a dad, a call from a friend or a relative.  I wished I could be a bit different, and ignore all distractions, and that's what I am working on to achieve.  Focus, and ignore the rest for a short while.

I decided to use a larger pattern from some wallets I made some time ago.  I also decided to use kitchen linens, instead of store bought fabric.  I have a box of kitchen linens, that came from an estate sale of a retirement home.  There is a dozen Australian themed linens, from someone's travels to Australia.  This is what I like about vintage fabrics.  I like to think about and imagine the person that owned it, what were they like, what were they doing with the linens, fabrics.  Did they buy it, or did they get it as a gift?  What was the occasion?  I am not sure why these thoughts bring me inspiration and comfort, and it helps me focus.  I guess it doesn't matter, as long as I enjoy the experience.

I got some discarded matt boards, from old photographs.  And I thought I'd give it a try to make pseudo ATC.  They are not the right size, I just cut them to something small but inconsistent, 3"x3", or 3.25"x3"... This birdman stamp I got recently has intrigued me, so I played with it a little bit.

Then I am trying to finish up some projects, such as these bags I was making out of old button shirts and fabric remnants.

In between all that, I hang out with my kids, or in this picture my daughter.  The two of us were waiting for my son during his weekend pottery class.

And then I also had a visitor, my Bulgarian friend Lora, and her newest addition to her family, her third daughter.

And, I also got my eyes checked, and got new glasses.  So here I am....a 'selfie' for you.
